Regarding Traditions

Hey hey. As of writing this, I just finished the Ozon post a matter of minutes ago. This shouldn't be a terribly long post, but it's going out regardless. There are a couple of format constraints from the Budgetfight setup that I am able to abolish now that this blog is officially mine. Alright, alright. What am I talking about? I'll bullet it.

  • Decklists
    • My opinion on decklists is somewhat complex. I completely understand the importance of decklists, believe me, but I have an issue with them: They enable bad netdecking. I'm fine with the concept of taking a deck from the internet and playing it assuming you know the deck. While Buddyfight doesn't have as huge of a problem due to its simplicity, netdecking is too often just approached as, "yeah, whatever. I found a list, I'll run with it," with no understanding of how the deck works and why, regardless of all the disclaimers. Therefore, I'm removing the decklist in future posts. I've always been of the opinion that a post should be written well enough to allow the reader to form a skeleton and adjust it how they see fit.
    • But you know, I get it. Sometimes, you just have no clue where to go. That's why I encourage readers to talk with me. I'm happy to answer any questions or even provide lists if asked, as it demonstrates an active interest in the decks posted here (disclaimer: I say this, but if your message or comment only reads "List plox?" or some variant thereof, I'm pretty unlikely to provide it). I'm almost always online on Discord. Just ping me on the server linked on the sidebar or PM me if you aren't comfortable in a server (@Alchemist_pants#2043). Heck, I'd even be willing to answer questions in the comments below posts. I just want to minimize blindly clicking on a post, scrolling to the decklist section, and leaving.
    • Finally, I want to make it extremely clear that I don't want to be taken as an authority. I'm not some wacko who refuses to share all of his decks, I just don't want anybody to put me on a pedestal. In the end, I'm just like my readers: a Buddyfighter. I'm not some guru. I'm just someone who wants to voice his opinion. I know it sounds like I'm beating a dead horse, but I'm completely serious when I say that I don't believe I am above anyone. Heck, a lot of my opinions are shaped by other people's ideas. Just ask me or any of my friends anything you want to know and I'm sure you'll get a quick and effective answer.
  • Closing Sections
    • If you look on the existing deck posts of the blog, you see something below the decklists: effectiveness, price, competitive viability, and final words. I'm eliminating the effectiveness section. Buddyfight is an extremely list- and player-driven game. To assign a deck a rating on how well it performs seems arbitrary to me, especially after asking Chang what he thinks of it. While I can say it's a good idea in theory, it's impossible to rate just a deck. Nothing in card games exists in a vacuum. Effectiveness is based on the player, the player's list, and the environment the deck is expected to perform in.
    • I am, however, keeping the price, viability ("competitive?"), and final words sections. I believe these are all independent of the player and environment, as they are a much more concrete scale. The price, of course, can fluctuate, but that's to be expected and is the reason the price range exists. Viability ebbs and flows, but generally very few decks break far from where they already lie in terms of viability, with a few exceptions like main cast decks getting support or the deck aging poorly. Budget decks, though, tend to almost always remain in either a "not competitive" or "competitive for a budget deck" level, without really moving a whole lot from said level.
This is all that I can think of for now. I still plan on employing the classic strategy of moving through the decks and explaining the concepts of all the cards, but I'm doing these things to encourage reader engagement and remove some the arbitrary things from future posts. Thanks for reading if you somehow find this post. As always, stay frosty.
